The family of Xavier Scrogham, 18, has retained Trent A. McCain to represent them as the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department investigates the death of the teen on August 29, 2016. On August 29, the 18-year old was riding a motorcycle when an off-duty, Nashville (Indiana) reserve police officer, Leonard Burch, engaged in a high-speed pursuit of Scrogham. Burch was well outside of the officer’s jurisdiction. The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the high-speed pursuit. The Republic reports that Burch has since resigned as a reserve officer.
“Xavier’s family has a lot of unanswered questions. It is my job to make sure they get the answers they seek. We are working with the Sheriff Matt Myers to find out what really happened two weeks ago,” said McCain.
McCain is the lead counsel in the Cary Owsley case involving several current and former Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputies. The lawsuit is currently pending in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana in Indianapolis.
